Turn it up for the holiday
If you're hosting this week, or driving to someone who is, you're going to spend a while in a kitchen or a car. Both are great places for a loud song.
Here's my unofficial guide. Prep music should be upbeat enough to get you moving but not so loud nobody can hear the oven timer. Drive music should have a big chorus so everybody in the car can join in, including the one who claims they don't sing. And after the meal, when everybody's tired and happy, put on something warm with a steady beat and let the room do its thing.
I'm always amazed at how a song can change the temperature of a house. A good one makes strangers into a choir. It makes the long afternoon feel short.
So whatever you're cooking, wherever you're headed, take a little music with you. Turn it up a notch past polite. Let the gravy simmer to the chorus.
