What a single is for

A single is a handshake. It's one song, by itself, with its own cover, put out so you can decide whether you want to know the rest of us.

I used to think of singles as the leftovers, the stuff that came before the real thing. I've changed my mind. A single gets the whole spotlight for a few weeks. People can play it on repeat, learn every word, and tell a friend about it without having to explain a fifteen song record.

That's the plan for the band. Songs come out one at a time, on Fridays, and the album gathers them up when it's ready. You'll have heard the parts before the whole shows up, which I think makes the whole better. It's the same reason you like a hometown band you saw before everybody else did.

If one of the songs gets stuck in your head this month, you can thank the single for that. It's doing its job.
